Astronaut Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is the only employee of the lunar station. His main responsibility is to harvest and send to Earth supplies of helium-3, clean fuel in great demand on his home planet. Bell has no direct communication with Earth, and his only “companion” is intelligent computer GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey). Thus isolated from humans for so long, Bell, who is now approaching the end of his three-year contract, starts hallucinating and doubting his sanity, though his major wish remains the same – to get back home to his wife and child. Rockwell (“Choke,”  "Fros/Nixon") displays a remarkable ability to carry the whole film on his shoulders.
