Ukraine is an agricultural and industrial country of the Central-Eastern Europe. It covers the south-west of East-European planes and includes part of the Carpathian and Crimean mountains. From north to south it is 893 kilometers long, and from west to east it is 1316 kilometers wide. Strategically situated in average climate areas Ukraine has access to the Black and Azov seas.
Geopolitically situated on the border of western and eastern civilizations, Ukrainian culture, history and development has been  significantly affected by both of  them.
Ukraine has land and sea borders, their cumulative length equals 7590 kilometers.The land border of the country is 5631 km and includes three main sectors – western, eastern and northern. The sea border of Ukraine is 1959 km long. On the land Ukraine borders with the Russian Federation (2063), Republic of Belarus (975 km), Poland (542,5 km), Slovakia (98 km), Hungary (135 km), Romania (608 km) and Moldova (1194 km). Total border with Central and Western Europe equals 2590 km.
Ukrainian territory covers 603 700 square km , or 5,7% of European and 0,44 % of the worlds territory.
Thanks to a favorable geographical position in the center of the Europe and developed infrastructure for air, sea and land travel, Ukraine is a major transit territory for a large amount of cargo and passenger transportation.
The population of Ukraine in 2001 according statistical data amounted was 49,5 millions people.
Ukraine has highly developed industrial and scientific capabilities, including including ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy, shipbuilding, automobile, machinery, aviation and space, and chemical and petroleum industries. Ukraine is one of the leading energy producers.
